Team Gold & The Fanfare World Tour Invade Uniun Nightclub
Words By: Sean Moffatt
There is nothing more exciting as a music fan then having all of your expectations for an event not only met, but exceeded. Equally, it’s not every night that a talented producer can take their place on stage and prove to be just as capable at DJing as they are at making music. This past Friday at Uniun Nightclub in his return to Toronto German producer Thomas Gold managed to do both. Let me say this; there are very few DJ’s who work as feverously on stage as Gold does. His talent goes beyond the studio right to the club and translates into a full on experience. In front of a pit of ravers Gold went to work on a set that was full of surprises, his signature mash-ups and bootlegs, and an obvious energy that was relayed to his fans.
The night began like any other with residents Manzone & Strong taking turns prepping the crowd and building momentum ahead of Gold’s arrival. Their opening set proved to be another great opportunity to show-off their new mash-up of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger vs. WHO and the crowd expectedly ate it up.
I’ve always admired Thomas Gold for the time he dedicates to his fans. He’s always interacting with his fans on Twitter, and on Friday he took some time before and after his set to meet with many from Toronto. It was those very fans that built one of the wilder atmospheres to engulf Uniun to date. It’s worth mentioning that if you were a guy you were in luck because Gold attracted a ton of girls, many of whom spent much of the night dancing on shoulders and smiling at the star DJ.

With Gold set to takeoff for New York at 7:00 A.M. we didn’t get an extended appearance like his show at The Guvernment in June, but no one was complaining because he made every minute on stage count. Team Goldhelped make the performance a memorable one thanks to their energetic attitudes and overall enthusiasm for the music. Every time Thomas Gold comes to Toronto he reminds us all just how talented he is, and with lots of momentum on his side, I expect even more great things from the German talent in 2013.
Thomas Gold Is Back Toronto! 5 Songs You Need To Know.
In the progressive house world there are few DJ’s who properly utilize all of the modern music technology at their disposal like German producer Thomas Gold. We all know Gold as a smart, forward thinking producer and yet few are aware of how good he is when it comes to actual DJing. What makes a Gold live set to appealing starts in the studio with his massive collection of mash-ups and bootlegs that are consistently some of the scenes best. That Million Voices vs. Fix You vs. Apologize bootleg that every DJ seems to play near the end of their sets? That’s Gold’s. My personal favourite sees him combine his original Sing 2 Me with the classic vocal from Red Carpet’s Alright. The point here is that you really have no idea what to expect tonight when he takes the stage because he is going to surprise you with combinations you’ve never heard before and that alone will make tonight different then any other shows.

Thomas Gold – Guvernent – RECAP
Fresh off a transfixing performance at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Thomas Gold arrived in Toronto bursting with energy for his 3rd visit in the last 6 months. Having played twice previously in the Kool Haus, this appearance would prove to be a new experience for the German star who was slated to play his first set inside the Guvernment mainroom. The enthusiasm of the crowd was constant the entire evening, influencing Gold to extend his set by almost an hour. Manzone & Strong handled the opening set soundly; starting the night with groovy tech sounds that evolved into progressive hits, readying the crowd for Gold’s arrival. Once inside the booth, it was clear that Thomas Gold was very much in his element. His marathon set went deep into the night, proof that the relationship between our city and the Axtone recording artist is one equally beloved by both sides.
This most recent visit was in promotion of Gold’s latest album that was released on May 28th “Axtone Presents: Thomas Gold”. Inside the club, the atmosphere was insane. There was a sense of readiness from the Guvernment crowd instantly as the intro edit to his latest release ‘The Wave (Thomas Gold Remix)’ kicked off his set. Whether you were at the back of the room or up on the stage, there was lasting entertainment from beginning to end. His set incorporated his infamous remixes for both Adele and Lady Gaga, productions that helped cement the current popularity of his music. Gold fully fed off the energy from the crowd throughout the night sharing some impressive mashups and bootlegs of current big room sounds. None were more impressive than the ‘Fix You vs. Million Voices vs. Apologize’ bootleg that was well received as an emotional interlude before diving into the bass-driven mashup of ‘Atom’ and ‘Calabria’ with the ‘Leave the World Behind’ vocal. The set continued to be highlighted by other offerings like Gold’s ‘Sing 2 Me’ with the accapella of ‘Alright’ by Red Carpet, one of the best house vocals of all time. There was also a significant alternative presence in his set as parts of Oasis, R.E.M., and Depeche Mode vocal samples were used to boost the electronic records he played.
The smile on his face the entire night proved just how happy he was to be here. There were definitely no signs that Gold has just arrived from a wild night at EDC. Guvernment crowds always manage to energize their guests, so it was no surprise that Gold climbed on top of the booth multiple times to interact with fans and throw t-shirts into the crowd. Originally scheduled for a 3 hour set, the vibe in the club was too intense to restrict him to that block of time. Gold continued to play past the 5:00 am mark to the satisfaction of everyone still present (which was most), before wrapping up yet another incredible appearance at the Guvernment complex.
The compilation album ‘Axtone Presents: Thomas Gold’ was released on May 28th and is available on iTunes.
