Diplo & Friends – Avicii Guest Mix [March 2, 2013]

20120804-05-veld-downsview-avicii-1

Words By: Sean Moffatt

As one of Sweden’s biggest dance music exports, bonified star Avicii has experienced both the highs and lows of a rapid rise to fame.  By now many fans (and I’m sure Avicii himself) have grown tired of hearing Levels and who can blame them, its everywhere.  There is no denying however that same record helped launch him into the headliner status he relishes today, but it is a real shame that the hit song continues to define his career in the eyes of many people.

This past weekend Avicii viciously opened the eyes of those who have pigeonholed him into one musical category with one of the best mixes to ever be featured on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Diplo & Friends.

First off the mix features only ONE Avicii record, Let Me Show You Love.  That’s right, no Levels, no I Could Be The One (Niktim), or any other Avicii record.  The Swede quite simply seizes the opportunity to showcase how talented and versatile he is as a DJ.  Motown classics Take Me In Your Arms and Tracks of My Tears kick off the mix and from there Avicii leaves no genre untouched.  French duo Justice make two appearances with D.A.N.C.E and Phantom Pt. 2, and rock classic Cold As Ice from Foreigner manages to make a fitting appearance.  The stand out track in my opinion comes from Henrik B for his brilliant production Klyftamon that is the epitome of a musical journey.

The mix also gives listeners a glimpse into the mind of Avicii through original tracks that the Swede has sampled in his productions.  All This Love That I’m Giving from Gwen McCrae is sampled in My Feelings For You, and Sweet Dreams from Eurythmics was used to produce Swede Dreams just to name a few.

If you have any doubt in the abilities of this infamous Swede then listen to this mix, there is no doubt it will change your mind.

Mix of the Week: Eric Prydz Essential Mix [02.02.2013]

eric_prydz

This past Friday night Pete Tong and the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix celebrated the return of Eric Prydz, one of the session’s most prestige guests.  Prydz is the first big artist to take on the mix in 2013 but could potentially have already won Essential Mix of the Year. What makes this Pryda offering so inspiring is Prydz ability to show the world that a great mix is not about how intense you can be or how many bangers you drop, but instead how a mix can be a powerful journey through music.

Prydz’ approach to his craft is extremely unique to the dance music genre.  His collection of records is bigger then you can imagine and he is always showcasing new, unreleased, and untitled work in his EPIC Radio podcast.  His latest Essential Mix follows that same formula and there is a ton of new material for all of us to enjoy.

Prydz returns to The Guvernment for the first time in years on February 17 and I for one and beyond excited for it.
